THE COMPANY

Ernest Monmarthe established Champagne Monmarthe in 1930, and since then the family has been living and working in Ludes, part of Montagne de Reims. Jean-Guy took over from his father in 1990, and continues running the business together with his wife Sandrine. In 2021, with the arrival of Gauthier, there are seven generations of Monmarthe! The vineyards cover an area of 17 hectares, divided into 22 parcels with Premier Cru classification, for a total yearly production of 140,000 bottles. It is a small family-run business where each champagne is produced only with the grapes collected from its own vineyards. They produce seven wines, all Premier Cru, where two wines stand out in particular: the vintage brut, always produced without malolactic fermentation, and the Coup de Coeur, which has an extra-brut dosage and is placed on sale after no less than 4 years on yeast. This small business fully represents the tradition of the RĂ©colant-Manipulants with wines that have character and become more elegant and mineral as time goes by.

Montagne de Reims

The Montagne de Reims is planted with pinot noir and to a lesser extent pinot meunier. The vines, planted on north-facing slopes such as those of Verzenay and Verzy, produce base wines that are much more acidic and less powerful than those produced on the Montagne de Reims sides of Ay, but capable of bringing delicacy. Montagne wines strengthen bouquet, gradation and acidity.
