THE COMPANY

One of the pioneers of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in California’s Russian River Valley in Sonoma County, De Loach has continued to experiment and perfect the best combinations of soil and substrate with different clones for over 30 years. One of the first American wineries to believe in Pinot Noir, with its acquisition by the Boisset family in 2003, it began a process of transferring its Burgundian knowledge with the aim of revitalising the soil and at the same time making wines that were the result of their terroir. Brian Maloney, the winery’s young oenologist, has one motto: ‘terroir show first’. Certified organic in 2008 and biodynamic in 2009, the winery began, in full French style, the vinification of individual terroirs: from Maboroshi to Green Valley to Pennacchio in search of the highest expressions of Pinot Noir. De Loach is now a perfect ambassador of Californian winemaking with wines that well represent their terroir with great ageing potential.

Sonoma Valley

Sonoma County produces far more grapes than Napa County and under more varied conditions. As elsewhere in California, the climate depends on the accessibility of Pacific fogs and the resulting cloudiness. The Russian River area is the coolest in the area: coolness is especially pronounced between the river mouth and Guerneville, much less in the Santa Rosa Plain and still much less in inland areas such as Healdsburg. This is one of the California areas suitable for pinot noir with its open, fruity and fascinating structure. Green Valley is an even cooler enclave near the Russian River that is carving out its own reputation for particularly vibrant Chardonnay.
