Vallée du Rhône

South

Chateauneuf-du-Pape is the most renowned center of the southern Rhône, north of Avignon, and stands on hills dominated by the ruins of a papal summer residence. Grenache grapes are the backbone of the AOC, often in association with mourvèdre grapes that need warm weather to ripen and syrah along with cinsault and other local varieties. The cliché for Chateauneuf-du-Pape is galet, the rounded heat-absorbing stone found almost exclusively in some local vineyards, although in reality the soils in this area are very varied, some with high proportions of clay.
