Ao Yun, the first Himalayan winery, was born from a dream that began in 2008: to create a unique, world-class fine wine in China. At the behest of Moët Hennessy, Dr. Tony Jordan embarked on a journey into the unknown and, after exploring the vast lands of China for four years, arrived in northern Yunnan, where he observed an ideal microclimate for a prized cabernet. Ao Yun’s team, led by Technical Director Maxence Dulou, carries out this vision. Ao Yun is located near the legendary and remote village of Shangri-La in the foothills of the Himalayas. Ao Yun’s 27-hectare vineyard is divided into 727 sub-blocks located on the banks of the Mekong River, in the UNESCO protected area of the Three Parallel Rivers and below the sacred snow mountain Meili (6800 m). Each of the 4 villages is spread over complementary altitudes, from 2100 to 2600 m, and has different soils, sun exposure, and microclimates.
